MY EXPERIENCE : STPM

Coffee Talk

Now i would like to share with you guys about my experience being a STPM student.

I just finished form 6 last year, it took me 1 year and a half to finish.

First off, you might hear people say these to you;
“Don’t waste your time going into STPM”
“uh, STPM? You should go and take other routes instead of that.”
“You will waste your time studying for that.”

I am here to tell you to not listen to those kind of sayings. They are not true because, I, as a STPM leaver, am very very very much grateful that I went into STPM in the first place. I learnt SO much, even the things that are not related to my academics. It was a great phase. Honestly. Trust me when I say, No Regrets, at all.

One thing to keep in mind is; you have to put your whole effort and focus into it if you are planning to take STPM. There are going to be 3 semesters throughout your 1 year & a half. There are going to be course works where they can be pretty challenging to handle but like we were told, “it is a practice for you to handle assignments and works especially in your future university life.” I have to agree with that. Especially knowing how to use the ‘Writer’ & ‘Powerpoint’ better now hahaha!

For my STPM, I took these subjects:

  • Muet (compulsory)
  • Pengajian Am (compulsory)
  • Bahasa Melayu
  • Sejarah
  • Pendidikan Seni Visual

toughest one? i have to say pengajian am. yep.

School offered me science stream but I changed to arts stream instead of staying in my science class. Why? I felt like I couldn’t handle science anymore and I have a huge love and passion for arts.. But for those who really love science, please don’t give up like I did. I don’t regret changing to arts stream tho. It was a great decision hahaha! p/s do not take subjects that you have no interest in. At least take 1 subject that you like.

These are the some of the other subjects that STPM offers:

  • Perakaunan, Sains Sukan, Pengajian Perniagaan, Geografi, Ekonomi, ICT, Mathematics (M), Mathematics (T), Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Kesusasteraan Melayu, Literature in English, Bahasa Cina.

Okay so you see, I didn’t scored well during form 4 and 5. I never really put enough effort into my spm years and I was a BIG procrastinator. I went through a lot of failures in terms of academics during Form 1 – 5 so I promised myself that I will improve and work harder to achieve good grades for STPM.

I hold onto my promise until the final exam and I am very happy with it. I managed to get 3.58 CGPA where I nearly gave up during preparing for the exams. Mind you there were 3 trials and 3 exams throughout the whole process and it was CHALLENGING. Not to forget the amount of course works that we have to handle at the same time WHEW. But I knew that nothing is impossible. If other people can do it, we can do it too. right? We just have to work for it to taste the sweetness of success.

One more thing, take note that if you are going to be a STPM student, it is like studying at a university(they said). This is because your teachers will not help you with everything. You will have to be more independent. Your teachers will not provide all the notes that you need. You will have look for your own notes and etc. Don’t worry, Google will be your bestfriend. Also, you will need to buy reference books for each semester. I suggest you to buy Oxford Fajar reference books. Sasbadi is great too.

First semester was great. The only pressure was the Sem 1 exam. Second semester was probably the toughest because we had to manage our time wisely. Basically it was like dividing our bodies into two because we had loads of stressful course works to finish and Sem II trial and exam to focus on. Third semester was okay for me. Tougher than Sem 1 but i managed to handle it anyway.

Preparing for our visit to UMS and yes that is our lovely & one of the coolest teacher, Teacher Jessica.

Lowkey tho, the most memorable moment during stpm were taking naps, eating and watching movies with friends on laptops in class. Hahaahahhahahahahahahahahahaha!

When i was studying in Form 6, i get to know a lot of new people. I get to go to a new school because my former school does not offer STPM. I get to improve my social skills like self-confidence and talking with new people. I now have the guts to stand and speak infront of people because of the crazy amount of presentations that we had to do. Oh oh also, I improved my english through STPM because of Muet. I can speak better and write better now(at least that’s what i think). Still learning tho hehehe

What’s next? After graduating STPM, if you want to pursue your studies, you will need to apply for your degree: Private Uni or Public Uni. Your choice. Well you can save a lot of money if you go into public ones. Private ones are also great but DO check the MQA of the course that you want to take.  It is only safe for you to study the particular course if it is approved by the MQA. Be careful children.

That is all for today, hope this helps some of you 🙂
